Choosing a level
Light keeps quality at 82% with no resizing, best for print and portfolios. Medium drops quality to 65% and caps the longest side at 2400px, a solid fit for websites and stores. Extreme pushes quality to 40% and resizes the longest side to 1600px, suited to email, chat and thumbnails. The table below has the exact numbers and typical savings for each level.
What compression keeps intact
Compression strips EXIF metadata on save, trimming a little extra size beyond the level itself. If compressing would make a file bigger than the original, Compress keeps the original untouched instead of forcing a worse result on you. Output format matches your input, except GIF, which saves as PNG, and transparency in PNG or WebP photos survives the process untouched. Everything runs with your browser's own image codecs, so nothing about your photo passes through a server.

JPG
Compressed JPG stays JPG, the format most photos already use.
PNG
Compressed PNG stays PNG, transparency is never flattened.
WebP
Compressed WebP stays WebP, transparency comes through untouched.
GIF
GIF is saved as a compressed PNG, since GIF compression works differently.
Start with Medium. Go Extreme only if the file still exceeds your limit.
Extreme resizes images larger than 1600 px. Use Light for print.
If a file would get bigger, the original is kept, you never lose quality for nothing.

FAQ
Will Compress hit an exact file size?
Yes, if you use the target size field. Type a number in KB and Compress lowers quality until the file lands under it. Without a target, pick a level instead, and the result depends on the photo.
Which level should I start with?
Start with Medium. Move to Extreme only if the result is still too large for what you need.
Does compression remove information from my photo?
Compress strips EXIF metadata on save, so camera and location details are removed. It does not resize your photo unless you choose Extreme on an image larger than 1600px.
What happens if compressing makes the file bigger?
Compress keeps the original file untouched. You never end up with a compressed file larger than what you started with.
What file types can I compress?
You can compress JPG, PNG, WebP and GIF, up to 20MB each. GIF files convert to PNG as part of the process.
